Restoring Community

Take your basic restorative practices to a deeper level

Putting Theory into Practice for Teachers and School Staff is a six-week intensive online experience designed for teachers, school counselors and paraprofessionals who have participated in Basic Restorative Practices* professional development. The essential theme of this event is how to set high expectations of students while also providing high levels of support — working with students rather than doing things to or for them.

Throughout the six weeks, you will engage in opportunities to practice the full range of restorative practices in your setting with the goal of building positive classroom community as well as responding fairly and directly when problems occur.

  • Weeks 1 and 2 focus on the social discipline window, emphasizing self-reflection and competencies to help you stay more in the "with" box.
  • Weeks 3 and 4 delve deeply into proactive community building, including practical ways to foster positive relationships in your classroom.
  • Weeks 5 and 6 explore responses to harm and how to utilize problem-solving strategies to address needs that arise among students, staff and families.

* Prerequisite: You must have completed Introduction to Restorative Practices and Using Circles Effectively (days 1 and 2 of our in-person Basic Restorative Practices event) or Restorative Practices for Educators before registering.
